Behind the Shadows Podcast Review

The Pitch:
Harvey Guillen discusses What We Do in the Shadows with the cast & crew.
The Product:
Behind the Shadows is a tricky little venture to pin down. Much like gender is a spectrum, so too is this podcast. Episodes sometimes feature a cast member, occasionally celebrity fans of the show join, and others are bonus episodes titled “Live Reddit Talk”.
The first episode coincided with the first episode of Season 4 of the show. Were there previous episodes? It’s unclear. Further muddying the waters is the fact that this episode of the Behind the Shadows podcast is preceded by an ad for the Behind the Shadows podcast.
From the outside it seems like someone in an office somewhere said ‘hey, podcasts are a thing, right? Let’s get one of the cast to do one. They can, uh, talk about each episode as they air and we can rope in one of the cast members or whatever.”
And that might have been what happened had the swashbuckling Harvey Guillen not been chosen to helm this podcasting ship. Harvey is markedly different to Guillermo, his character on the show. Guillermo is somewhat awkward and reserved. Harvey Guillen on the other hand is going to Harvey Guillen all over the place and we are here for it.
So, some episodes do loosely discuss particular episodes. Some episodes delve into the fandom the guest has for the show. Sometimes Harvey sinks his teeth into the fandom he personally has for the guest. Towards the end of the released episodes are back to back drag queen episodes with Jinkx Monsoon and Trixie Mattel, and suddenly there’s an unabashedly Latinx and Queer podcast about comedy vampires and everything seems right with the world.
It’s unclear if Behind the Shadows will continue, or what format it will take if it does. What’s clear is we must protect Harvey Guillen at all costs and give him a podcasting platform for whatever he so chooses to do with it.
Can You Sleep To It?
An Eternal Slumber, perhaps.
Recommended Episode:
It’s a good show to dig around and pick an episode with you favourite guest.
