Good One Podcast Review
The Pitch:
A podcast about jokes, and the people who tell them.
The Product:
This podcast was recommended to me by my sister, which is notable for two reasons. Firstly, she, like many in my life, tolerates my podcast obsession with as much patience as she can muster. But secondly and more importantly, she generally doesn’t like comedy. At all. By her own admission.
Now, I know that’s a lot to unpack. And maybe that’s for a different podcast. Or therapy. But it’s important context before you dive into this long form interview style podcast.
Good One is a podcast about jokes. It’s not necessarily a podcast where people tell jokes all the time. Instead it’s where jokes and the joke-writing process are poked, prodded and pontificated on.
Each episode, the host Jesse David Fox brings on a comedian who has a particular bit they are proud of, or was pivotal in their career. Many of the episodes are about the jokes that ‘made’ the comic. We hear the joke, usually from a live recording in a jokes natural environment — a dark room that smells of chicken wings and booze — and then we go deep into every aspect of the joke writing process from start, middle, re-writes, and eventually the finish.
