Let’s Make A Music Podcast Review

The Pitch:

A comedy podcast that turns listener suggestions into songs.

The Product:

So, this podcast is a delight. It’s twee, it’s a little too happy with itself, and it’s brought me the most joy during some dark wintery months.

LMaM was a podcast before, and after a hiatus it is back. I’m glad it is. In each episode the hosts — Karen Han, Brian David Gilbert, and Laura Kathryn Gilbert — go through a brainstorming session to come up with a song. The theme is pre-determined and, in a pretty clever community-building move, the lyrics are largely driven by user suggestions to the prompt on Twitter.

There is a kind of free-wheeling tag team improvisation in the songwriting discussions. The hosts have a natural chemistry and also find themselves giddy at the creative ingenuity of their listeners. There’s also a lot — like, a lot — of cat-related content from the community of commenters, which I don’t quite get, but to each their own.

Special praise has to be given to the show’s musical composer and producer, Jonah Scott. Jonah used to be on mic in the previous iteration of LMaM, but since the return he has let his music do the talking. And boy does he do a good job of distilling the sometimes vague, vibe-based musical input of his counterparts and…
