Song Exploder Podcast Review

The Pitch:

Musicians take apart their songs, and piece by piece, tell the story of how they were made.

The Product:

Music nerds, rejoice! This podcast is exactly what it says it is. Each episode features a different musician, explaining their song-writing process on a particular song, with original recordings and demo clips interspersed throughout.

From the outside this can seem a little overwhelming. You’re probably not going to know all the artists or songs. And there’s no host as such, it’s literally just the artist explaining how the songs come together. But if you have even a passing interest in music or podcasts, then I promise you, there’s something for you here!

Unsurprisingly, the audio engineering and production on this are top notch. They kind of have to be. It’s an ambitious project, and one that could have been executed poorly, but each episode is a professionally made audio wonder.

The podcast really should have an episode for everyone. In recent months it has covered a spectrum of musicians from Robyn to Slipknot. And while it’s amazing to get insights into the processes of your favourites, some of standout episodes are the ones where your mind is blown by the craft of a musician you overlooked.

Can You Sleep To It?

No! The opposite. You listen to it and get inspired to create.

Recommended Episode:

Obviously, pick an episode about a song you like. But, I will say it’s worth listening to the insanity that is the songwriting process of River Cuomo in the Weezer episode.
