Ghost Church Podcast Review

The Pitch:

Jamie Loftus explores American Spiritualism.

The Product:

Here at Podcasteroid, we’ll apparently follow Jamie Loftus down whatever weird personal rabbit hole she feels like going down, as long as she creates an accompanying podcast.

We reviewed The Bechdel Cast back in 2019 (“pre-pandemic”, ever heard of it?) and followed that with a mid-pandemic appraisal of My Year in Mensa.

Now we turn our attention to Ghost Church, a limited series about American spiritualism, a century-old tradition of communing with the dead. Right in time for Hallowe’en. I mean summer. Right in time for summer.

There is a more thoughtful approach here than the usual frantic comedic stylings Loftus uses in her other work. The subject matter is heavier, which is saying something considering the other two podcasts tackle feminism and the shitshow that is the ‘culture’ of Mensa.

Ghost Church tackles grief, loneliness, and religion, so it’s unsurprising that the energy is a little different. Don’t worry, there are still jokes, and this series is worth the listen for her uncle from Boston who is a medium, and extremely BAH-STIN about it.

It’s a journey, and much like religion, one that you should take yourself and draw your own conclusions.

Can You Sleep To It?

Maybe, if you don’t mind the possibly spooky dreams.
