Wrestling Anonymous Podcast Review
The Pitch:
Wrestler Colt Cabana curates anonymous calls from wrestling fans.
The Product:
Okay so first things first, I’m a Colt Cabana fan. His Art of Wrestling show has been recommended here, where I described him as “a man with a glint in his eye and wrestling in his blood.” I don’t remember writing that, but it sounds pretty fucking good honestly — and it’s accurate too.
But, when I heard about this podcast I hated the idea. At least at first. And that’s on me, and maybe a little on the title of the show.
I’m don’t know why, but I imagined this as part Alcoholics Anonymous, part Every Little Thing, where people would call into Colt — possibly in character — and do whatever shtick or bit they’ve been working on.
But I was wrong, thank the wrestling gods. What actually happens here is pretty close to the pitch — Cabana sifts through voicemails, left anonymously, plays the most interesting and adds his thoughts.
The curation part is what turns what could have been the Frankenstein’s monster of a show I envisioned into something worthy of your time. Colt has to clarify pretty early that stories should have a beginning, middle, and and end, and he does a great job removing the jobbers of the voicemail world.
